I bet you’re frustrated over the long lines at your local gym. Furthermore, I bet you don’t appreciate being charged an extra $45 every month for a gym membership that you might not even use any more. Well, a home gym might just be the answer to what you are looking for. Buy the home gym equipment once and you don’t have to keep paying the fees over and over again. Home gyms can be a sound investment for anyone looking to install one in their basement or workout room. Let’s take a look at a few tips that might come in handy for anyone looking to install a home gym in their home.

1) Don’t discard used equipment, but be sure and pick up a good deal on other people’s discarded equipment (if that makes any sense). Used equipment can provide you a really good deal because some people (myself not included) go on exercise binges and buy equipment that they just quit using after a month or two. Their investment can certainly be your gain. Look through classifieds and on Ebay to research the best exercise equipment that you can possibly afford. Often times, you will find that the equipment that you are after is priced very reasonably.

2) Consider buying commercial fitness equipment. A lot of the time, the regular home gym equipment that you want to buy isn’t what you are used to using at the gym. Find out what types of stuff you like the best and do some due diligence. Look for commercial fitness equipment dealers and you should be able to shop for the same stuff that the local workout spot has for you.

3) Get knowledgeable about the different types of home gym equipment. All equipment is not created equal. Figure out what the different types of equipment are and what the advantages and disadvantages of buying different stuff is. There is an large array of equipment available. Make the right decisions.

There are so many exercise bikes available that it’s easy to be overwhelmed. Spinning bikes, stationary bikes, dual action bikes, and recumbent bikes are probably some of the terms you’ve heard. It’s almost as though you have to be a fitness equipment engineer to understand the differences! Here’s a quick summary of these confusing terms.

Spinning Bikes

You’ve probably heard about the spin craze that has become so popular in health clubs. Spinning bikes usually have at least a front wheel that spins (which is why they are so brilliantly named spinning bikes). These bikes might be the current fad, but they aren’t very comfortable. The seats are small and hard. The classes make these boring bikes more interesting, but as home exercise bikes, they quickly become tedious.

Stationary Bikes

Stationary bikes (or upright bikes) are the exercise bikes that most people can identify. It’s the same basic model as in the 1980’s. Once again, it’s fairly uncomfortable. You can’t really do anything like read or watch TV because you’re leaning left and right and bouncing, so it, too, quickly gets boring.

Dual Action Bikes

Dual action bikes are aptly named, as they give you both an upper and lower body workout. There are handles that move independently – much like an elliptical machine. It’s a good workout, but a bit tough for beginners, and as usual, the time on the bike will eventually get boring.

You can also get dual action bikes that allow you to adjust the machine to create an arm-pedaling workout. It’s usually fairly difficult to make the adjustments. It’s also two separate exercises, which create a longer workout. Most people aren’t as likely to keep up such a routine.

Recumbent Bikes

Recumbent bikes are the exercise bikes with the comfortable bucket seats. You sit back and lower to the ground as you pedal. These exercise bikes are easy enough for even the most sedentary beginners, and they usually offer workout programs to keep the workouts from becoming mundane.

The Experts Recognize the Advantages of Recumbent Bikes

Most physicians and personal trainers recommend recumbent bikes. Recumbent bikes are better for people of all different fitness levels. You are more likely to keep up a recumbent bike routine over time, the bikes are safer, and there are different benefits for both men and women.

Recumbent Bikes for All Fitness Levels

Even the most sedentary person will find a recumbent exercise bike easy to use. You can adjust the settings to offer little or no resistance as you pedal. People who are overweight will definitely find the seat much larger and more comfortable than other exercise bikes.

Athletes will find the recumbent exercise bike a challenge. The resistance can become incredibly difficult. The bike can simulate pedaling up hills. Most recumbent bikes offer various programs that will require you to sprint and tackle hills. If you want an upper body workout as you pedal, you can easily add weights and do repetitions as you sit back in the recumbent bike seat.

Recumbent Bikes Offer a Sustainable Workout

The programs offered by most recumbent exercise bikes definitely keep the workout from becoming boring. You can simulate a course that is easy or difficult, flat or hilly. When shopping for exercise bikes, it’s better to get a bike with as many variations as possible.

The fact that a recumbent bike is suitable for all levels will keep you getting back on the bike. If you’re feeling particularly tired or lazy one day, you can have an easy workout where you can read a book or newspaper. If you really want to test your limits, you can crank up the music, set the machine to more difficult levels, and add some weights for an upper body workout.

Recumbent Bikes are Safer

Because you sit back and lower to the ground in a recumbent bike, it is better for your body. Most exercise bikes force you to hunch over, causing a stiff back. Some dual action bikes are back injuries waiting to happen. Recumbent bikes require that you sit with good posture as you pedal.

Recumbent bikes also offer one of the few cardio workouts that put no pressure on your knees and other joints. You can’t “cheat” on a recumbent bike and stand up when you’re finding it more difficult to pedal. Standing like that on other types of exercise bikes puts unnecessary pressure on your knees and ankles. Recumbent bikes let your body exercise at an angle where your body weight is not stressing your joints. Even people with back and knee problems will find a recumbent bike easy to use.

Why Men Should Choose Recumbent Exercise Bikes

So many men neglect their lower bodies when they workout, especially in strength training. It’s common to see buffed out men with giant biceps and tiny little bird legs. That’s because it’s easier to get an upper body workout at home. If you just invest in a recumbent bike, you can set the machine to high resistance. You will build leg muscle, and you can even do curls while you pedal.

Recumbent bikes can also allow men to get a great cardio workout without the discomfort that only a man knows on regular bikes or other types of exercise bikes. With the large, comfortable seats of recumbent bikes, you are much more likely to enjoy your workout pain-free.

If you move the seat of a recumbent bike up a bit to bring your legs higher, you can even target the lower abs and have to do less crunches to get the bottom of your six-pack!

Things Women Should Know About Recumbent Bikes

Two words, ladies: legs and bottoms. Recumbent exercise bikes are so comfortable and easy to use that eventually you can do workouts giving you results like you’ve spent hours a day on a stair-stepper.

Recumbent bikes can give you a fat burning cardio workout with enough resistance to help you build long, lean muscle. Picture Tina Turner legs. Recumbent bikes also are great for your inner thighs. Using different programs and settings, you will be able to target different muscle areas in your legs for longer looking, leaner legs.

According to most polls, women claim in higher numbers to not have time for exercise because of more responsibilities in the home. With the positioning of a recumbent bike, you can multi-task to more easily fit in a workout. You are able to read, catch the news, and even use a phone or your handheld organizer.

Finding a Recumbent Exercise Bike

With prices between $200 and $3000, there is quite a variety of recumbent bikes available. Use the Internet to find great deals (including free shipping most of the time). Because the bikes are great for any level and help you to finally be able to stick with a safe and effective workout routine, you can splurge a little. This is definitely one of the best investments you can make for your health.

It seems like every time you go to the gym, they’ve got another fancy new machine. The number of ways to build exercise machines seems to be almost endless, and coming up with new ideas for them is a lucrative industry. When you look at gym equipment, though, you can pick out some of the most useful and flexible machines and tools, and separate them from the gimmicks.

The number one piece of gym equipment, without question, has to be weights. Weights are just heavy pieces of metal, and yet are a vital ingredient of almost every gym machine, as well as very useful in their own right. Lifting weights can strengthen the majority of the muscles in your body, if you use a variety of lifting techniques.

Beyond that, many classic gym machines replicate real-world sports and activities in order to exercise your muscles. Treadmills, for example, reproduce walking and running, rowing machines allow you to train your arm muscles without actually going out on the water, and exercise bikes simulate cycling. Punching bags allow you to box without an opponent. Each one of these sports simulations has a specific reason for being included, usually that it is good for a specific muscle group, as well as being useful for people who are actually training for the sport in question.

If you’re thinking of buying gym equipment for your home instead of going to the gym, weights are probably the best thing to get, as they are versatile and compact. Machines like treadmills and exercise bikes can be ten times the size of a set of weights, not to mention ten times the price, yet cannot do as much for you as a simple set of weights can. Try not to get caught up in the latest ‘as seen on TV’ gimmick, as most advertised gym equipment will only do anything for one specific muscle group, and even then probably won’t do much for that. Make sure you know exactly what you’re buying and what it will do for you before you make the investment.

Should you ever consider purchasing a cheap elliptical trainer?
It’s my position that you should purchase the best elliptical trainer that your budget allows. The elliptical trainers that I recommend all retail above $1000. Some of these are above $2000. No question, this is a substantial sum for most people, but you should keep in mind that this is an investment in your long term health and fitness. You want a machine that not only is enjoyable to use, but lasts for many years to come.

The very nature of elliptical trainers and treadmills for that matter, makes them prone to wear. As a result, they will need to be serviced at some point during their lifetime. Maybe even more than once. This is not meant to frighten you, quite the contrary, but to impress upon you that skimping on quality to save money is usually not good economics when it comes to elliptical trainers.

The other thing to keep in mind about cheap ellipticals is that they will probably wobble side-to-side during use and may even produce annoying squeaks due to cheap design. All of these problems are greatly magnified if you are heavy. The end result could very likely be a snapped bolt or damaged frame component. Toppling off an elliptical trainer while in full stride is a scary thought!

So what should you do if coming up with $2000 is just not possible for now? Well, you can either wait until you save up the money, which isn’t a bad idea. However, if you just can’t wait because your health requires you to get started on a fitness program ASAP, then you have some decisions to make. You could join a gym that has a wide selection of cardio equipment and probably has helpful staff to get you started on a fitness program or you can begin shopping for an elliptical trainer within your price range.

How to minimize your risk

Right off the bat I don’t recommend that you consider any elliptical trainer that retails for under $500. You’d just be throwing your money away. We have all seen the cheap elliptical strider that is advertised on infomercials featuring a popular fitness celebrity. Sorry, but you’re on your own if you want one of these.

The fundamental problem with elliptical trainers that retail between $500 – $1000 is their sturdiness and durability. This stems from the quality of their components and construction. Below are requirements that may help increase the chances that you have a satisfying experience owning one of these ellipticals:

–Weigh less than 195 lb. Under 155 lb. is even better. Women may do better here than men.

–Moderate to light use. Elliptical trainers in this price range hold up better if they are not heavily used.

–Purchase an extended warranty if the manufacturer offers one. Most low-end ellipticals come with only a 90-day warranty. That should tell you something right away! Don’t settle for anything less than a 1-year warranty on the wear components of an elliptical trainer.

Finally, one way to approach purchasing a cheap elliptical is to view it as a transitional machine. If you get only 2 years from a $600 elliptical trainer, but during this period you’ve lost weight and greatly improved your cardiovascular conditioning, then it was definitely money well-spent.

When you’re ready to replace it, you probably will have come to appreciate what it takes to produce a quality elliptical trainer. After you’ve experienced the great benefits that these machines have to offer, it may be easier to make the investment in a higher quality machine.

Sally Squires, the Health and Nutrtion columnist for the Washington Post, is one of the most cogent, sensible and prolific writers on these subjects on the web. You should bookmark her site and read her regularly. In this typically insightful piece on Halloween eating issues, Sally discusses ways to deal with the health issues raised by this holiday. Here are some of her points. Dark chocolate is more healthful than regular milk chocolate. As always, portion control matters. Limit consumption of candy to something reasonable. Protein bars have somewhat better health benefits and lower calorie content than many normal candies. Popcorn is a wise choice since it is whole grain and naturally low in calories, if you skip the butter. Processed fruit snacks are a good substitute for candy. Portion control can help limit calories. Food companies are providing small, individually packaged portions of popular foods, including Nabisco 100 Calorie Packs, downsized servings of Oreos, Chips Ahoy, Wheat Thins, Honey Maid Cinnamon graham crackers, Planters Peanut Butter Cookies, Kraft Cheese Nips and Ritz Snack Mix. All have three grams or less of fat (although not all are trans-fat-free). Snyder’s one-ounce pretzel bags are a sugar-free, no-fat option that clocks in at 110 calories. I would add that one of the keys to coping successfully with all of the caloric issues raised by this uniquely American holiday is to try to avoid making the holiday all about the candy. Focus on the decorations, the costumes, and the celebration of the day, rather than the eating, per se. Also, burn as many calories as you can. When trick or treating with the kids, do some extra walking or keep moving as you wait for the kids at the curb. (But safety of the kids comes first, obviously.) When preparing for the celebration at your home, burn some extra calories by aerobically putting up copius decorations and doing preparations.

Considering buying a treadmill? There are several factors to consider before deciding on which treadmill make and model.

Belt size, speed, horsepower, displays, deck cushioning – all of these aspects can influence your choice from the large number of models available.

A Treadmill can take a real pounding, if you are a serious indoor runner. Runner’s World selected the heavy-duty Precor M9.33 Treadmill as top of its class. Its sturdy construction makes it feel like a treadmill you may find in a health-club, earning the model high marks for ergonomics, an oversized running surface, and an array of features that includes a heart-rate program.

A Precor Treadmill will give you an inch-thick deck and no weight limit, as well as controls that are so touch-sensitive that you don’t have to push on them. Precor’s frame has a lifetime warranty, with a ten-year warranty on all parts and a one-year warranty on labor.

If you have a limited budget, the Smooth 5.0P Treadmill is an outstanding value. Its display panel is highly readable, and it folds up to save space. Incline and speed controls are on the handgrips, which makes adjustments safe and easy. A Smooth Treadmill has a running surface, which is smaller than the Precor’s, however, its 10-year motor warranty is twice as long as the motor warranty on Precor’s.

The Smooth 5.0 Treadmill is Smooth’s top selling treadmill. Among other less expensive models, the ProForm 995 SEL Treadmill gets good marks for its interactive iFIT.com technology with CD programs and its smooth 2.75 hp motor. A ProForm Treadmill represents very good value for money but these machines are not really meant for heavy extensive use.

The Landice Treadmill is another well known make of quality exercise equipment. Earning two nominations in the latest Consensus Report is the L7 LTD Executive Trainer Treadmill. If you can afford it, this is a really high quality treadmill.

Icon Health & Fitness now produces HealthRider, Image, NordicTrack, ProForm, and Reebok Treadmill models. Icon also developed iFIT.com technology, which streams workouts from its fitness training Web site, iFIT.com, to the company’s Internet-compatible models.

If you live in an apartment, you may want to consider purchasing a folding Treadmill that can be easily put away. In general, most inexpensive models like the Smooth 5.0P Treadmill or ProForm 995 SEL Treadmill offer this feature.

February is the perfect month to consider mending your broken heart and San Francisco is the just the right city to do it. No, I am not talking about your love life. I am talking about strengthening the most important muscle in your body; your heart.

Valentine’s month is a period in between the holidays and summer. There are not as many distractions which make it a great month to begin an exercise program. The San Francisco setting for this is ideal with the cool clear days February provides and no fog!

More importantly there is no better city to train than San Francisco because of our unique topography. Where most cities have to rely solely on long, boring and flat cardio workouts we have a ton of options for quick, high intensity cardio workouts.

Three great options for fast cardio training that The City offers are: beach sprints, hill sprints and stair climbing.

1. Beach Sprints: Sprinting at the beach is great for developing strength in your legs as well as your heart. It takes more effort than sprinting on a solid surface and you can’t beat the scenery (unless all you can see is fog but that’s pretty cool too.) A great cardio workout at the beach would be to sprint for twenty seconds then walk for ten and repeat eight times for a total of four minutes. This is the Fartlek method of training and has been proven to be just as effective as running at a steady state for longer periods.

2. Hill Sprints: When I was young and had to walk everywhere I would curse the hills of San Francisco. Driving my old cars with stick shifts was never much fun either. Now it’s all about automatics and using the hills to exercise. Much like beach sprints; hill sprints are great for strengthening the legs and glutes, as well as your heart. The best thing about hill sprints is most likely you have a hill right outside your door (if you don’t you probably live close to the beach.) Try the “around the block run.” Jog easy downhill and around the turns and sprint uphill. Depending on the length and slope of the hill start out doing this once or twice and try to build up to five or six times or more.

3. Stair Climbing: One of the aspects of San Francisco I have always loved, even as a kid, is the amount of stairs we have. Long staircases slice through neighborhoods providing easy routes to our favorite coffee shops and create the feeling, for me, of being in an old world time and place. What I really love about them is the leg, glute and cardio workout they can provide. Try running up a long staircase, walking up two stairs at a time or carrying a pair of dumbbells on your climb. If you want to climb it more than once be careful coming back down as you will be tired.

Try these once or twice a week along with a longer, steady run. Of course do a proper warm up before exercising and always consult a physician before starting a new exercise program. Happy Valentines Day!

Treadmills serve your purpose 24/7 and 12 months a day despite of snow, sun or rain. Without any doubt, treadmills have great utility. Half an hour walking on treadmill keep your body firm and fit. Sometimes it even helps you in loosing weight too. Probably the easiest exercise for sedentary people is walking,(recommended speed is 2 miles per hour.) Treadmills come real handy when external reasons like unsuitable weather, icy roads or your tight schedule do not allow you to go on walk outdoors.

Make your treadmill your friend! : Treadmill Guide

a) Initially you might feel uncomfortable while running on treadmill and feel as it is not meant for you. But this feeling generally gets on to many people. Slowly get accustomed to it. After all, it is for your great health.

b) Start by walking on treadmill. Set speed to say, at 5 mph to start off. You can take support from handrails but don’t make it a habit. It is supposed to be used only in beginning.

c) Do not use hand rails once you have started running.

d) While running, stay in the center of the belt. Don’t try too hard and try to push against the belt. Let belt do its work on its own and you just keep floating above it.

e) Turn on some good music so that you don’t feel lonely or bored.

f) Keep varying the elevation at regular intervals. By raising elevation, you make up for the wind resistance which you encounter while running on roads.

g) Make sure you don’t swing your arms outwards. Treadmills help you correcting your running posture too.

h) Focusing is the key. Look straight and not downwards.

Now, since you are equipped with all the knowledge to venture into buying a treadmill for yourself, I recommend you a treadmill outlet which offers immense varieties on treadmills with their work out plans at the lowest prices. Catch up their sales! Compare them before buying. Buy Treadmills. Shop for Treadmills – Factory Direct

You might wonder what mind power has to do with fitness, health and weight loss, after all, isn’t it all about what you eat and how much you exercise?

Eating and exercise are certainly two thirds of the equation, but the remaining component is in your head, literally!

Motivation, desire, expectation and visualization are key concepts that, when understood and utilized, can be powerful ammunition that will accelerate your results.

Motivation to exercise and lose weight is probably what brought you to this page in the first place. However, maintaining or renewing your motivation to exercise can be a fleeting thing. It’s all too easy to become discouraged. There are a few tips on this subject in our article on motivation to exercise. Now I want to describe how mind power can drastically affect the speed and results of your fitness/weight loss program.

If you’ve never read Deepak Chopras’ views and explanations of the mind-body connection in such books as ‘Quantum Healing’ or ‘The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire’ you should really consider doing so. His explanations of mind power are very involved and insightful, much more so than I’ll write here as he has written whole books on the concept. This is really powerful stuff!

Expectation and visualization are not often mentioned in fitness programs but they should be as mind power, or the influence of the mind over the body is much stronger than most people realize.

When you focus the power of your mind on the goal you seek, you will begin to influence the events that will produce the desired results.

Sounds a little like magic but this power of positive thinking has worked in documented cases involving advanced and ‘incurable’ cancer (as well as other diseases) to spontaneously cause the body to heal itself when conventional medicine had failed.

Why not direct this power toward all of your goals?

I am going to give you some instructions on how to use this ‘mind power’, which everyone possesses but few take advantage of, to reach your fitness and weight loss goals.

* Draw a clear picture of your goals.

Your purpose (goal) in persuing a fitness plan should be written down. -eg- I will again be able to fit into a size 4 dress..(yeah right!, like I ever could!) or losing 15 lbs of fat or gaining the necessary strength or endurance to enter a competition. Your goals will be individual and they will be moving targets, that is when you achieve them (and you will) you set your sites on a new goal. The clear expectation that you will achieve your goals is a necessary part of ‘mind power’ so repeat it out loud every day.

* Adjust from mere hoping and wishing to ‘Expectation’.

Goals and program firmly in hand, your desire to achieve your goals become an expectation. You will drop that 25lbs., you will again fit into that favourite dress, you will do what is necessary to land that job (you see, this technique works for all areas of your life). This positive mindset goes beyond desire and represents your commitment to succeed.

* Visualization

Here’s where mind power really shines and it’s kind of fun. Paint an image in your mind of what you will look like and perform like upon reaching your goals. Take a ‘before’ picture to hang on fridge and visualize what the ‘after’ picture will look like. Focus on that vision with intense concentration and do it often, everyday in fact.

Clear goals, expectations and visualization will all help to create and sustain the drive to push forward. The war is won one battle at a time and you will win!

* Discipline

Ah, that naughty word, the lack of which causes many to falter. As failure is not an option in this scenario, you are going to follow the program faithfully. (don’t worry, it’s not that difficult) You will set aside the time each day that is best for you to workout and it will become your own religion. After a couple of weeks you will find that it becomes a habit and that is the key! Keep that vision in your mind. Remember that discipline will make the difference between success and failure.

* Practice, Practice, Practice!

Ok, this visualization and mind power thing might seem a little far fetched, but ask anyone who practices meditation and you will learn of increased ability to focus and decreased stress in addition to many other benefits. Ask how often they practice meditation and most will respond ‘daily’.

Every day you should set aside a short time to quietly put your mind power to work. Do it before your regular workout session if possible. Think of it is a form of meditation, almost self-hypnosis that will help you maintain your focus and reinforce your motivation. Sit quietly, relax your thoughts and body (don’t fall asleep), clear your head of the days chaos and concentrate on that body that will be yours. Absorb yourself in your visualization firmly believing it will come to pass.

And it will!
