BT Unveils Plans to Cover 66 Percent Households with Optic Fibre Broadband in UK

BT has confirmed the news that it is going to provide its superfast optic fibre broadband network to a greater number of households than had been expected earlier, covering almost two thirds of the households in the United Kingdom by 2015.

By the end of the present year, four million homes would be provided the high-speed network, and about 40 percent households will be covered by 2012. BT has made such a vast coverage possible due to a huge £2.5 billion investment.

Ian Livingstone, BT’s chief executive, announced the plans of increasing coverage during a press conference in which the company’s annual profits were stated to be £1 billion, up to April 2010. He added that increase in efficiency was the main cause of the rise in estimated households to be covered, and that the company’s £2.5 billion investment was one of the largest in the world, without including any public sector funding.

Perhaps the 20,000 job cuts this year and the 15,000 job sheds the previous year are responsible for the increased efficiency, but it is definitely good news for broadband subscribers. BT’s plans mean that a large majority of UK consumers will gain access to high speed internet connectivity, while also having the option to choose between BT’s fibre broadband or Virgin’s cable (click Virgin Broadband deals for info). This is expected to bring down the price of premium products in the market.
