The Johnston Compact: Keeping Your Town Clean

Pass through your nearest town or city early in the morning and you will see a number of johnston compact street sweepers moving slowly around cleaning up the litter strewn around by all the partying of the previous night. It’s a regular early morning time scene, and it frequently covers the litter problem we encounter. We don’t actually give litter a consideration as we feel keeping the roads clean is not our chore.

However, there is a subtle yet fundamental influence litter plays on human psychology. One is more liable to think an area is lacking law and order if rubbish is scattered around, and so felons see litter as a possible sign for a chance of a mugging or robbery. The same sign produces some concern in other individuals who worry they might be wandering through a more risky area and are wary of being attacked.

Not only that, but also the influence on the visual attraction of an area. Litter lying around can make a neighbourhood look run down even though it’s only been trashed by revellers from the night before. This can harm the reputation of a location if individuals are visiting the location for this specific time and only discover it in its messy state.

There’s absolutely no purpose to throw litter if there are unfilled bins around the location. If there is a lack of litter bins, or the rubbish bins that are there are overflowing, this is a matter to address the local council with. Trashing an area has a damaging influence on everybody.
