Poker Terms: ‘Limp In’

‘Limping in’ in online poker means to simply call the amount of the casino blind bet already before you, rather than raising or folding. It is considered, at its most basic form, to be a sign of weakness, as a hand of true power would be expected to raise coming into a pot. A player will often limp in with more middling hands like small pairs and suited connectors, hoping to see the flop before they continue.

Aggressive poker online players, when acting late in a hand, then often like to raise after several limpers, a ‘cut off’ play, trying to pick up the limping money from the players whose hands can likely not withstand a raise.

Alternatively, then, as a result of this kind of act, many players like to limp with big preflop hands, trying to disguise their holdings so as to induce others to raise, so that they can then reraise.

Commonly, players interested in entering a pot with a wide range of hands, especially at calmer tables, will try to limp into more pots and hope to make a big hand by flopping big before they commit much money to the pot.

At more aggressive tables, limping is discouraged, as someone will likely raise trying to pick up the pots that no one else wants.
