What You Need to Know before Buying Restaurant Barware

Whether you own a hotel, a pub, or a restaurant, alcohol sales will be a critical factor in the success of your business. Of course if you sell alcohol, that likely means you’re going to have a bar. And if you have a bar, at some point you are going to have to invest in – or at least replace – your barware. The types of bar equipment your bartenders are going to need to do their jobs can be divided into three classes.

1) Infrastructure - This encompasses everything from your soda gun to your coolers to your beer tap system.

2) Bar Glasses – It should be fairly obvious that you can’t serve drinks without glassware.

3) Barware – This includes all of the extra tools you will need to mix and serve drinks.

A generic term, barware is more often than not used to describe all the essential utensils that are so crucial to a bartender’s job. This category incorporates everything cork screws to cocktail shakers to zesting tools to bottle openers The problem is that when you purchase inferior barware for your restaurant, you are in danger of serving low quality drinks no matter how adept your bartenders are or how fine the quality of your spirits are. As such, here’s a few rules you should heed when buying equipment for your bar.

The colder your cocktails are when you serve them, the better they will taste, so try and find an insulated cocktail shaker. If you opt for a Boston shaker you want to be sure you buy a hawthorn strainer. For cutting citrus twist garnishes, a zester is essential, but a good quality channel knife works better. Buy a wine opener you can rely on. Nobody likes finding pieces of cork in their wine. Make sure you have plenty of bottle openers on hand because you’re going to lose a lot of them. A wall mounted bottle opener is actually a better choice. Portion control is everything, so also make sure to have a couple double jiggers or spirit measures around.
