Are You A Gagwriter!
Do you often have grest ideas for cartoons, but cannot draw very well? A lesser known source of income for the freelance writer is to collaborate with a professional cartoonist. Your idea will then be brought to life with or without any further import from yourself. You have then become a gagwriter, as it is termed in the business!
It is, of course, not a simple task to find a cartoonist who will like any of your ideas well enough to be willing to collaborate.
As with all writing, if you are embarking on a new line of work, much persistance is required.
You will no doubt need to send your best ideas to many cartoonists before, hopefully, getting a break. When the cartoon is completed, the cartoonist then has to market the work. If you are fortunate, it will sell, be syndicated and may even be seen worldwide in any media!
It is best to work on commision rather than sell your cartoon idea outright. This way you will receive a share of the royalties which could be very worthwhile in the best case.
A problem is that most cartoonists have their own ideas, or already have good relied upon sources. They also may only draw certain styles or subjects, so this would have to be researched and accertained before you should offer your ideas. The cartoonist will sometimes advertise for good new material to be sent for assessment. This may be found in such publications as Writer’s Market, which is also available online.
There are those who will hold your ideas and market them to the cartoonist. You can also post your own adverts of course.
This is not an easy line of work but, if you are inventive and are successful, it will certainly be fun as well!
